Brief History

The beginning of teaching in statistics in the Middle East Technical University dates back to early 1960s. In the academic year of 1962- 1963, the Department of Economics and Statistics of the Faculty of Administrative Sciences offered courses on statistics and probability with special emphasis on sampling techniques, statistical inference, correlation and regression analysis. The department was reorganized in the academic year of 1975- 1976 as the Department of Economics, and the Department of Applied Statistics. In 1976- 1977 a new department, the Department of Operational Research and Statistics was founded within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The teaching staff in the new department comprised of a Professor, 2 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors, 2 Instructors, and 3 Assistants. Teaching in statistics in these departments continued until the 1981- 1982 academic year. With the creation of the Higher Educational Council (Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu, YÖK) in 1981, the department of Applied Statistics was combined with the department of Operational Research and Statistics and was named as the Department of Statistics in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

In the academic year of 1983- 1984, the Department had employed 2 Professors, one with an educational background formerly in mechanical engineering and later in Operational Research, and the other, a statistician imported from the department of applied statistics upon its closure until 1982. Among other members of the teaching staff, there were 3 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, 4 Instructors, and 5 Assistants. An interesting feature of the Department of Statistics at that time was the composition of its academic staff. About half of the staff was transferred from the Department of Applied Statistics and the other half was with Operations Research origin. The faculty members of Operations Research origin have joined the Department of Industrial Engineering in 1984.
